Turing Test

A test to determine if a machine can exhibit behavior indistinguishable from a human.

What it means

Proposed by Alan Turing in 1950, the Turing Test involves a human judge having a text conversation with unseen partners (one human, one machine). If the judge can't tell which is which, the machine passes.

Why it matters

It was long considered the benchmark for 'true' AI. While modern AI often passes it, the test sparked the philosophical debate about what it really means for a machine to 'think'.
